Argentina had their best performance of the Copa America so far, after a 6-1 win over Paraguay on Tuesday night.
An astounding performance from Lionel Messi allowed Marcos Rojo, Javier Pastore, Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain and Angel di Maria to hit the back of the net for Argentina. Before the match, Argentina had managed unconvincing victories all through the tournament, scoring only four goals in their four previous matches. However, Captain of the team, Lionel Messi said it was not because the team had not been playing well.
Talking about the victory, Messi said, “We talked about that just before the match and we said it was just by chance that we hadn’t scored more because we’ve been playing well. Today all the goals came at once.”
15 minutes after kick off, Argentina took the lead when Messi swung in a free kick from the left corner of the pitch. Rojo connected to the free kick on his second attempt and scored from close range.
12 minutes later, Lionel Messi made an inch-perfect pass through the Paraguayan defence to Javier Pastore to finished it with a perfect shot that gave them another goal. Minutes later, more misfortune struck Paraguay when both their strikers; Derliz Gonzalez and Roque Santa Cruz limped out, injured. A goal from Lucas Barrios minutes before the break gave the Paraguayan team hope to fight on.
Minutes into the second half Javier Pastor’s powerful run through the midfield saw him pass the ball to Di Maria, whose shot into the bottom corner of the net couldn’t be stopped by the Paraguayan keeper.
At 3-1, Argentina still had more goals in store against Paraguay; Messi’s mazy run caused confusion at the Paraguayan defence allowing him to set up Pastore. His shot was parried by goal-keeper Villar but Di Maria was on hand to slot home the rebound.
80 minutes on the clock, goal scorer, Di Maria turned in an assist to Sergio Aguero through a cross from the left; a header landed the ball into the back of the Paraguayan goal. Few minutes to the end of the game, Higuain came off the bench to score the sixth goal for Argentina.
The astounding performance has allowed Argentina to book a place at the final, which will see them face host country, Chile, at Santiago’s national stadium this Saturday June 4, 2015.
